You’re not alone! Holly had some of these same feelings. In fact, she has a particular appreciation for juniors who show non-traditional breeds. Her breed of choice is Norwegian Elkhounds, a breed she feels is often overlooked and doesn’t have as much success as other more popular breeds. Encountering this didn’t stop Holly. She continued showing her Norwegian Elkhound, a challenging, independent-thinking, uncommon breed. She feels that decision helped her learn and grow.

As an eight-year old she served as a ring steward on many occasions, and still stewards this day. In juniors, she persevered earning high rankings. After aging out of junior showmanship in 2012, she quickly earned her junior showmanship judges license in 2013.

Holly is a young influencer and a fearless leader. At just 26 years old, she is enthusiastically striving to overhaul junior showmanship to lower barriers and increase participation. She is a tireless advocate for making entries free for juniors, allowing day-of entries (rather than two and half weeks in advance), and removing the ownership requirements so Juniors can improve their skills by handling breeds they don’t personally own.

Currently, Holly is the Social Media Chair of the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America and runs their Facebook pages for both members and the general public. Recently, she and her older sister, Alicia, were breed ambassadors at Westminster.

Holly graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree in April 2020 from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America (NEAA) and actively involved in their junior showmanship committee. She is also a member of the Norwegian Elkhound Minuteman Association and the Merrimack Valley Kennel Club (MVKC).

Over the years she has worked to introduce new programs for juniors/4-H at local shows, introduced junior membership to the Elkhound parent club, supports making junior entries free at annual MVKC confirmation shows, and assisted with show clinics/mentorship programs. She is looking forward to more dog shows in the future, mentorship, and starting a new position on the NEAA board.

ABOUT MEET THE PROFESSIONALS

Meet the Professionals for Junior Handlers is a monthly webinar facilitated by Kelly Lyn Marquis and WinAll Coaching LLC. The purpose of the program is to bridge the gap between professional dog show handlers and junior handlers who aspire to become pros. It provides an opportunity for juniors to get to know handlers on a more personal level, learn unique training tips and methods, and create an open forum for juniors to access the expertise of top professionals nationwide. Junior handlers are typically between 9 and 18 years old.

The program is designed for junior handlers but anyone interested in professional handling is welcome to attend.
